Cosy days at home call for the classics.

We all need a ‘doona day’ sometimes, whether it’s a rainy Sunday or you’re just feeling under the weather. Make a big bowl of popcorn, snuggle under comfy bamboo sheets and turn on one of these feel-good flicks.

Empire Records

This ’90s coming-of-age comedy follows a group of misfit teens over the course of one day as they try to stop the independent record store they work at from being sold to a large chain. Starring a baby-faced Renée Zellweger, Liv Tyler and Anthony LaPaglia, it’s an indie cult classic that’s pure, quirky fun (and has a killer ’90s soundtrack).

The Hangover

If you’re actually nursing a hangover, this buck’s party flick is the perfect antidote. Three groomsmen wake in their Las Vegas hotel room to find the groom is missing and they can’t remember a thing about what they did the night before. Involving a tiger, baby, stripper and an appearance by Mike Tyson, it’s laughs-a-minute movie medicine – you won’t even notice your thumping head.

Groundhog Day

Imagine waking up every day and having to live the same day over and over … well, that’s what weatherman Phil (played by the legendary Bill Murray) has to grapple with. After being reluctantly sent to cover a story about a weather-forecasting groundhog (or ‘rat’, as he calls it), for the fourth year in a row, he makes no effort to hide his frustration. On awaking the 'following' day he discovers that it's Groundhog Day again, and again, and again. We could watch this movie – also starring Andie MacDowell – again, and again, and again too.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

If you’ve got the flu (or happen to be chucking a sickie), this flick could be just what the doctor ordered. Teenager Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) has an uncanny skill for cutting classes and getting away with it. For his last hurrah before graduation, Ferris calls in sick, ‘borrows’ a Ferrari, and embarks on a one-day adventure through the streets of Chicago.

Reservoir Dogs

Quentin Tarantino’s first movie tells the tale of six criminals who are hired to carry out a robbery. The heist is ambushed by police and the gang are forced to shoot their way out. After the survivors realise they were set up, they go on a mission to find the traitor. Not for the faint-hearted, this crime thriller will have you on the edge of your bed.
